COUNSELLING

Denise is an integrative counsellor who draws on Person-Centred Therapy (PCT), Transactional Analysis (TA), and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to tailor her approach to each client's needs.

HYPNOSIS

Hypnotherapy is a potent therapeutic tool that has been used for thousands of years, dating back to the ancient Egyptians.

At its core, hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness where a person is neither fully awake nor asleep, occupying a state between wakefulness and sleep. In this state, the mind becomes highly focused and receptive to suggestions, while remaining deeply relaxed.

Psychologists often compare the mind to an iceberg. The one-tenth above the surface represents the conscious mind, which is associated with everyday awareness, logical thinking, and rational analysis. This part of the mind operates while we are awake and functions in a controlled, objective manner. It rests when we sleep.

The 90% of the iceberg submerged beneath the surface corresponds to the unconscious mind. This part of the mind is connected to the emotional, intuitive, and creative aspects of our psyche. It is active even when we are asleep, and it houses memories, learned behaviours, and unwanted habits. It also holds untapped potential and knowledge, which can be accessed through hypnosis.

As Albert Einstein once said, “Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them.” Hypnosis allows individuals to access the unconscious mind, uncovering the root causes of issues that may not be easily addressed by the conscious mind alone.

Many people have experienced trance-like states naturally—such as when daydreaming, becoming fully absorbed in a book, TV show, or piece of music, or when driving a familiar route and arriving at a destination with little memory of part of the journey. In these instances, individuals are highly focused and relaxed.

During hypnotherapy, a trained practitioner guides the person into a deep state of relaxation to facilitate access to the unconscious mind. This enables the exploration of past events or learned behaviours that may be contributing to unwanted patterns of thinking or behaviour. With this focused approach, the person becomes more open to positive suggestions and therapeutic interventions, leading to the possibility of meaningful, lasting change.

ADVICE

Patients should make it known to the therapist if they have any eye problems, wear contact lenses, have hay fever or suffer with any joint problems in their hands, arms, shoulders, back or neck.

The client should inform the therapist if there is anything that frightens them - such as water, enclosed spaces, animals etc.

It is advisable that clients wear comfortable clothing during the session. Some people like to bring a blanket to cover themselves while in trance.

Patients should make sure they have eaten a few hours prior to the appointment. Avoiding stimulants such as caffeine is also a good idea. If the patient feels unwell, i.e. with flu or a cold, it is wise to cancel the session.

If the patient is taking any medication please make a note of it and pass on the details to the therapist.

In certain cases it may be necessary to contact the client’s doctor before therapy can begin and therefore their GP’s details will be required.

EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUE (E.F.T)

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a therapeutic approach rooted in energy psychology. It shares the same principles as acupuncture and acupressure, but instead of using needles or pressure on specific points, EFT uses tapping on designated meridian points.

Energy psychology, which has been the foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 5,000 years, is based on the belief that everything is composed of energy. TCM posits that the body has 14 main energy channels, known as meridians, which are interconnected. Along these meridians are acupuncture points, with around 360 located throughout the body, typically at the ends of meridians or near bony areas close to the skin's surface.

In Eastern medicine, physical and emotional issues are thought to stem from imbalances, disruptions, or blockages in the flow of energy through these meridians. By applying pressure, using needles, or tapping on acupuncture points, these imbalances can be cleared, allowing energy to flow freely again.

Additionally, stimulating specific acupuncture points through EFT is believed to influence the secretion of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, which is linked to mood regulation. Low serotonin levels are commonly found in individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, or addiction.

EFT is a non-traditional yet highly effective therapy for addressing a wide range of issues, including phobias, trauma, emotional challenges, anxiety, low self-confidence, and addictions.

My Mobility Issue Exercise Class (MIEC) is for people with mild to moderate mobility issues.

PILATES

Pilates, which was pioneered by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s,
is a method of exercise based on several key principles.
pilates
These fundamental principles include controlled and precise movements, thoracic-ribcage breathing, centring (engagement of the core muscles), the correct alignment, concentration, flowing and co-ordinated movements.

Pilates improves posture, core strength, flexibility, balance, lung capacity, muscle imbalances, co-ordination, stamina and muscle tone.

I like to combine classic and modern Pilates in my classes. I also like to run themed-based classes. Thus, during my 8-week plan, I have classes that are themed: Mini-Ball Pilates, Resistance Band Pilates, Wall Pilates and Weights Pilates. Using different props challenges us in different ways.

My classes are divided into 5 key stages. These include: The Pilates Set-Up (application of the correct alignment, the breathing technique and centring); mobilisation of the joints and balance work; warming up of the main muscle groups; mat work Pilates; and a cool down.

YOGA

Yoga, which originated in India some 5,000 years ago, works on the mind and body.
yoga
Like Pilates, it is based on key principles. These are known as The Eight Limbs of Yoga (Yamas, Niyama’s, Asanas, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi).

The eight limbs of yoga focus on: yoga poses (Asanas); breathing techniques (Pranayama); meditation (Dhyana); sensory detachment (Pratyahara) and living life in an ethical, moral and disciplined way (Yamas and Niyamas).

Yoga improves one’s balance, flexibility, posture, strength, cardiovascular fitness, stamina, muscle tone and energy levels. It also works on focusing and relaxing the mind.

While my classes include a range of yoga disciplines, they mainly follow the Vinyasa path - as I like the idea of poses flowing into one another.

My yoga classes are divided into key stages: a breathing technique; mobilisation of the joints; the sun salutations; standing poses and balances; sitting poses, ending with a cool down in a lying position.

YOGALATES

My yogalates classes are a gentle introduction into the world of yoga and Pilates. They are prefect for beginners who want to gain all the benefits of both Pilates and yoga (core strength, flexibility, improved balance and cardiovascular fitness).
yogalates
They are prefect for beginners who want to gain all the benefits of both Pilates and yoga (core strength, flexibility, improved balance and cardiovascular fitness).

The first half of the session is dedicated to yoga and the second half to Pilates. There is a warm-up at the beginning of the class and a general cooling down stage at the end – combining yoga and Pilates moves.

MOBILITY ISSUE EXERCISE CLASS

My Mobility Issue Exercise Class (MIEC) is for people with mild to moderate mobility issues.
MIEC pic with weights in front
It is ideal for those who can no longer exercise on the floor due to difficulty getting up off the floor to a standing position. The exercises we do can be done sitting down, standing up or a combination of the two – depending on how you feel on the day of the class.

The MIEC class is based on Pilates principles (the correct alignment, engagement of the core muscles and the ribcage breathing technique) but combines a range of exercises from different disciplines.

The session is divided into stages that include: the Pilates Set-up; mobilisation of the joints; stamina, muscle strength and core work. There is a cool down at the end. We use light hand weights, resistance bands and a mini-Pilates ball.

The class is as easy or as hard as you want it to be. I offer up 4 levels for most exercises.
